The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced new UPI rules effective from April 1, 2025, aimed at enhancing security and preventing fraud. If you use UPI (Unified Payments Interface) for transactions, it’s crucial to check your bank-registered mobile number, or you may face issues with UPI payments.

Key Highlights of the New UPI Rules

1. Inactive Mobile Numbers Linked to UPI Will Be Deactivated

If your mobile number remains unused for 90 days, telecom operators may reassign it to a new user.

In such cases, any UPI ID linked to the old number will be automatically deactivated.

If your bank-linked mobile number is closed or changed, your UPI ID may be unlinked from your bank account.

2. Regular Updates Through Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL)

Banks and payment service providers (PSPs) must update user data weekly using MNRL and Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP).

This ensures that old and inactive numbers are removed from the UPI network, reducing the risk of fraud.

What Should UPI Users Do?

If you want uninterrupted access to UPI payments, follow these steps:

✅ Check and update your bank-registered mobile number regularly.
✅ If your mobile number has changed, register the new number with your bank immediately.
✅ Keep using your bank-linked mobile number to prevent it from being marked as inactive.

3. “Collect Payment” Feature Will Be Limited

Another important update is related to the "Collect Payment" feature:

NPCI has restricted "Collect Payment" requests to only large and verified merchants.

For individuals, the limit for "Collect Request" transactions will be capped at ₹2,000.

Why Are These Changes Being Made?

The primary goal of these updates is to make UPI transactions more secure and fraud-free. Many users often forget to update their mobile numbers in bank records, which can lead to security risks. These new UPI guidelines will help protect users from unauthorized transactions.

Final Thoughts: Stay Updated to Avoid UPI Disruptions

If you rely on Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or any UPI-based payment app, ensure your mobile number is active and updated. These simple steps will keep your UPI payments smooth and hassle-free.
